    Captain’s Log MAY 2008

It’s been a busy couple of months in Parrot head land with all the charity events going on.  Our ship has stopped to many ports along the way.  March 15th found us in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  Together we raised over $600 in donations and race fees to help find a cure for breast cancer.  Later that evening we sailed to Oxnard for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration hosted by George and Eileen.  The Guinness was flowing and the shepherd’s pie and corn beef was nothing short of, well, Irish.  The next weekend our ship landed at the Santa Barbara Marina for a whale watching trip aboard a 40 foot sail boat that was filled completely with parrot heads. The whales did not fully cooperate but a few were sighted along the way.

From Santa Barbara we headed south for the Ventura Harbor for our March meeting at Dukes, appropriately labeled “Dukes on Sunday”.  We enjoyed the warmest weather of the year that day which made the cold Landsharks even more refreshing than they normally are. Armed with our parrot head charm and our knack for having a good time the owners of Dukes invited us back any time.  We closed out the month in Thousand Oaks with at the Conejo Valley Days Chili Cook-off. Early in the morning the group transformed three EZ-Ups and a bunch of tables into an attractive Tiki Hut. As the gates opened Unkle Monkey began belting out Buffett Tunes and we began serving our Island Chili. George Mayo and Pati Engelstad entered their chili recipes and George also entered some doctored up S&F salsa.  By the end of the day we had served over 600 servings of chili, each ticket representing a charitable donation. Although we did not win any awards for our chili; George took home first place for his Salsa and the club took first place in the “Best Booth” and the “Showmanship” categories.  Both George and Pati made the finals with their chili. Our trophies will be on display at the May meeting.

Our Club also donated two Surfrider themed wine baskets for the silent auction at Phins to the West.  The baskets included Surfrider wine donated by Rosenthal Winery, light bottles, t-shirts, cork screws and coasters.  Value of the baskets was between $90 and $100.  Even though our club will not be attending Phins this year our presence will be felt with this donation and we will remain a partner with the Phins to the West.

As we turn the calendar page to May, this ship shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.  May 10th will find us in Camarillo for our monthly meeting. The meeting will be hosted by the Powel’s at their house. Prior to the meeting a number of us will be preparing for the Paso Robles camping trip by participating in the Crusin’ the Conejo bike ride in T.O.  If anyone who hasn’t signed up is interested in joining us, you can contact Steve Torres for information.  We are going to go easy with the 21 mile course.

If you are planning to attend the camping trip in Paso Robles and especially if you are planning to bring a trailer or RV it is important that you attend the meeting on May 10th.  Since spaces are first come, first serve we need to know how much space we need to reserve.  We will also be planning other activities for the weekend, including wine tasting, golf, wine tasting, bike riding, wine tasting, shopping, wine tasting, dining and ,of course, wine tasting.

Looking to the future we can look forward to the Ojai Wine Festival in June and a great 4th of July Celebration at the Mayo’s to start July and our annual Wine Tasting & Auction at Dave and Kathleen’s in late July.  In the planning stages are a night at the Magic Castle and at Dodger Stadium and other exciting events.  The dates for these are still in the works

Chili or Salsa recipes from George Mayo & Pati Engelstad will be available at the May meeting or upon request!

    APRIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

April 13th was the first real warm day of the 2008 summer season and the beachgoers were ready to party!!!  Parking – always difficult at the beach, was compounded by the crowds trying to cool off on the beaches of beautiful Ventura.  (I know some of you had a hard time finding a place to park).  The meeting started on Island Time – somewhere around 2:ish – we managed to assemble in the three booths they reserved for us and get the party (meeting) started.

Steve gave an overview of last months activities and asked for reports from the officers.  George Graham brought us up to date with our account balance and what expenses were pending.

We then moved on to the upcoming Conejo Valley Chili Cook-off plans.  George Mayo was unable to attend this meeting due to a family issue in Florida – but – sent along the Rules for the cook-off.  We discussed booth plans, big cooking kittles, tables and decorations.  It was agreed that we would meet at the cook-off around 7:30 am Sunday morning.  Volunteers were requested for booth duty.

Steve asked to renew the Surfrider Membership and it was approved. He provided a report for the planned basket donation.

Upcoming summer events were discussed with details on some still in the works.  A flyer was passed out for the Cruzin’ the Conejo bike ride set for Saturday the 10th of May.

The cold Landshark beers were consumed, the grub eaten, and plans secured for the next few weeks we headed out to our many ports until the next time…….

       MAY BUFFETT NEWS

An excerpt from the New Orleans Jazz Concert held in New Orleans held the first weekend in May – 2008

“In his final 40 minutes, he broke down “Come Monday” to acoustic guitar and steel drums; showcased a singer he met in a bar on an African island; led the most exquisitely un-P.C. sing-a-long “Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw?”; and cut loose Lafayette slide guitarist ace and frequent Buffett collaborator Sonny Landreth on “Southern Cross” and a grunged-up version of Landreth’s own “U.S.S. Zydecomobile.”

That’s when the party really got started. Buffett spotted an audience member wearing a T-shirt that read, “Helping Rebuild New Orleans one margarita at a time.” “I will trade you these flip-flops,” Buffett said, pointing at his own feet, “for that T-shirt.” Recognizing a one-of-a-kind Jazzfest souvenir when offered one, the guy accepted. Buffett immediately donned his new, slightly too big, “funky” T-shirt and kicked off the audience participatory “Fins.”
